How To Feel Like Yourself Again in Motherhood. Without Ignoring Your Baby or Your Needs
What Actually Matters in the Early Years (0–4). How to Support Your Child Without Pressure or Overthinking

Welcome, I’m Helen Buteux, a highly specialist HCPC registered occupational therapist, mum of two, founder of EmpowerMum Method, and a woman who completely rebuilt herself through matrescence (the transition a woman goes through when she becomes a mother).
For as long as I can remember, I dreamed of being a mum. I was the little girl with cushions up her jumper, already practising. So when I fell pregnant, it felt like everything in my life had clicked into place.
But motherhood didn’t arrive the way I imagined.
My first birth was long and not the birth I had hoped for. I had no idea how much the sleepless nights, the pressure to “bounce back,” and the noise of everyone else’s opinions would shake my confidence. Even with a supportive husband and loving family, I felt lost in a role I thought would come naturally.
Life shifted again with my second baby, and this time, something inside me cracked open.
Not in a “falling apart” way.
In a waking up kind of way.
I met matrescence long before I had the language for it. My identity changed, my body changed, my emotions felt bigger than ever. I didn’t recognise myself in photos. I hid inside an oversized “mum uniform.” I stopped moving my body. I comforted myself with sugary snacks. I loved my children deeply… but I didn’t feel like me.
So I invested in a coach, and this was the turning point.
I slowly began rebuilding myself. I started running again. I lost 30 pounds. I listened to parenting, therapy and mindset podcasts during nap-walks that made me think, “Hang on… Occupational Therapists understand this. This is what we do.”
For the first time in my life, I cared for my mental and physical health with intention.
And as I changed, something clicked:
Mothers don’t need more rules.
They need support, science made simple, and someone who truly sees them.
In my work as a highly specialist occupational therapist, I’ve supported hundreds of babies and families. I’ve watched children struggle not because they’re “behind,” but because they never had the chance to build the early foundations through play, connection and everyday interaction.
And I realised: the real magic happens when we support both the child and the mother.
That’s why I created the EmpowerMum Method, a blend of evidence-based early development, the lived reality of motherhood, and a deep respect for the mother’s identity.
Today, I guide mums through the same transformation I lived through myself:
From overwhelmed to grounded.
From unsure to confident.
From disconnected to deeply bonded.
From “I’ve lost myself” to “I’m finally me.”
My mission is simple: To show you that you’re not doing motherhood wrong, you just haven’t had the support you deserve.
Your story matters. And you deserve to feel strong, capable and connected in this new version of yourself.
I’m here to walk this path with you, with warmth, honesty, and zero judgement.
Let’s rebuild it all, together.
I help new mums understand their baby’s development, grow in confidence, and discover routines that truly fit their family. I also support Mum's in navigating their identity, emotions, and wellbeing. You’ll leave feeling clearer, calmer, and more confident. You’ll understand your baby better, trust yourself more, and have simple tools to support both development and your own wellbeing.
No. Whether this is your first baby or your third, the emotional and developmental shifts can feel huge.
Because real, lasting change takes time. Research shows it takes around 66 days to build new habits and shift identity, exactly why this programme is designed as a 12‑week journey.
A 12‑week container gives you:
Space for true transformation
Not quick fixes, real confidence, regulation, bonding, and developmental progress.
Support for both you and your baby
Growth unfolds gradually, and three months allows it to stick.
A safe, consistent holding space
You’re supported for a full season of motherhood.
A pace that feels manageable
Time to move through lessons, reflections, and calls without overwhelm.
After the 12 weeks, you can continue with gentle ongoing support
AI can share information, but it can’t feel the exhaustion of 3am feeds, hold a crying baby, or carry the weight of wondering if you’re doing it ‘right.’ I offer human empathy, emotional context, and accountability, support that checks in on how you really are and helps you thrive through the messy, beautiful reality of motherhood. This is education, guidance, and coaching from an experienced OT, blending professional expertise, lived experience, and evidence-informed practice.
The EmpowerMum Method is designed for mums with babies from newborn to around preschool age.
Right now, the EmpowerMum Journey focuses on supporting mums with little ones aged 0–12 months, while the Clarity and Thrive Calls are perfect for those navigating the early years, from birth to age five.
Soon, I’ll be adding new courses tailored for pregnancy, toddlers and preschoolers, so you’ll have gentle, evidence-based support at every stage of motherhood.
Join my mailing list to be the first to know when they launch and get early access to new resources.
I know time feels tight, I built this business while on maternity leave, so I truly get it. That’s why everything I share is simple, realistic, and designed to fit into busy Mum life. Lessons are just 5–15 minutes long, and they’ll actually save you time by stopping the endless doom scrolling for answers you’re not sure you can trust. Instead, you get clear, expert guidance that helps you feel confident and connected without wasting precious energy.
Becoming a mother is one of the biggest life transitions a woman will ever experience. Research shows that this shift impacts identity, confidence, lifestyle balance, emotional wellbeing, and everyday routines. Occupational therapists (OTs) specialise in helping women navigate meaningful daily activities, including feeding, bonding, sleep routines, returning to work, household roles, and self-care.
OTs support mothers holistically, so they feel empowered, prepared, and confident in their new role. This kind of support has been linked to reduced maternal stress, stronger mother–infant attachment, and lower risk of postnatal depression.
Mental health challenges often arise when expectations don’t match reality, identity feels lost, or daily roles feel overwhelming. Research highlights that mothers want empowerment, preparation, holistic care, and support for the complexity of motherhood, yet many feel the current system is too medicalised and not individualised.
OTs address this gap by working with women on the everyday experiences that shape wellbeing, routine, rest, bonding, meaning, and connection.
Through tailored, compassionate support, OTs help mothers feel seen, capable, and supported, reducing feelings of strain and promoting healthy, positive experiences of motherhood.
Yes. Everything I talk about is grounded in the most up to date evidence in child development, brain science, sensory integration rooted in occupational therapy and explained in a way that’s easy to understand and simple to use at home.
